About Juneteenth
Juneteenth, originating in Galveston, Texas in 1865, marks June 19th as African American Emancipation Day.
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862. It went into effect on January 1, 1863. However, slaves were not freed in the Confederacy until the Union arrived on June 18, 1865.
The next day, June 19th, General Gordon Granger announced that the slaves in Texas were free by order of the president of the United States.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
In cities across the country, people of all ethnicities, nationalities and religions celebrate through parades, marches, cookouts, public service awards, prayer, community gatherings and raising the Juneteenth Flag.
