About Juneteenth
Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas in 1865 observing June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day.
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862. It went into effect on January 1, 1863. However, slaves were not freed in the Confederacy until the Union arrived on June 18, 1865.
The next day, June 19th, General Gordon Granger announced that the slaves in Texas were free by order of the president of the United States.
Today, Juneteenth has become a holiday focusing on education, achievement, community building, reflection, rejoicing, and planning for the future.
In cities across the country, people of all ethnicities, nationalities and religions are joining to acknowledge a monumental time in history. They celebrate through parades, marches, cookouts, public service awards, prayer, community gatherings and raising the Juneteenth Flag.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 17, 2021, it become a federal holiday.
